New Income Cap for Child Support in N.Y. Simplifies Process

A state law adopted in August will increase the income cap for awarding child support for the first time in 20 years.

Under the Child Support Modernization Act, the combined parental income used in calculating child support will be capped at $130,000 - - up from $80,000 -- beginning Jan. 31, 2010. That amount will increase every two years based on the average annual percentage changes in the consumer price index for urban consumers (CPI-U) published by the U.S. Department of Labor.
