In the rush that precedes the holidays, one's attention is focused on various family obligations, get-togethers and gift- giving, along with many end-of-year business and other concerns. Nevertheless, it massages the egos of our "leaders" to have their own part in the pomp and festivities.

Although Winston Smith never had to contend with anything quite like Walmart, as I recall, the existence of the ubiquitous and hideously ugly "big-box" store almost seems to fit perfectly in the fictional Oceania.
