Army to Help Soldiers Purchase Homes

The U.S. Army recently created a pilot program that will give soldiers up to $40,000 toward the purchase of a new home or business after they successfully complete their service commitment. The Army Advantage Fund is the latest recruitment bonus being offered to attract new soldiers. The program is being tested in Albany; Cleveland; Montgomery, Ala.; San Antonio, Texas, and Seattle.

Former Interest On Lawyers Account Fund Chairmen Object to Gov. Spitzer Proposal

As state officials and legal service providers trade barbs over who is best suited to control the $25 million Interest on Lawyers Account Fund, barely 20 percent of the needs of the state's poorest clients are being met. Both Gov. Eliot Spitzer and the current IOLA board are claiming to represent the public's best interests. One Rochester provider said recently, however, that the issue might be insignificant in the bigger scheme of funding legal services.

Governors Speak Out On Subprime Mortgage Crisis

Gov. Eliot Spitzer last week joined governors from throughout the county in calling on the Bush Administration to deliver a comprehensive solution to the ongoing mortgage crisis, according to a release from Spitzer's office. The governors, in Washington, D.C. for the annual National Governors Association Winter Meeting, said federal efforts have failed to offer substantive relief to the majority of distressed homeowners.

Rochester-Based Connected Energy Corp. Acquired by Bpl Global Ltd.

Trillium Group announced last week that Connected Energy Corp. (CEC), a Rochester-based specialist in remote monitoring and management of distributed energy resources for supply and demand management, has been acquired by BPL Global Ltd. (BPLG), a smart grid technology company based in Pittsburgh. The transaction was approved by shareholders and closed late last week under undisclosed terms.
