New York State Judges Seeking Back Pay

Four New York judges on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the state Senate and Assembly and the State of New York in an attempt to force a raise in judicial pay and an award of back pay from 2000. The New York City-based firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP prepared the judges' complaint on a pro bono basis, with attorneys Thomas Bezanson and George Bundy Smith -- who is a former New York State Court of Appeals judge -- performing the bulk of the effort, according to a release f...

Upstate 'Guns, Gangs and Drugs Initiative' Results in 87 Arrests

New York State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo last week announced a successful "takedown" as part of his Guns, Gangs and Drugs Initiative. The effort netted 87 arrests through a multi-state, multi-law enforcement agency action that began on Sept. 6 and "set forth an aggressive model to help turn the tide Upstate against guns, gangs and drugs," according to a release from Cuomo's office.

G. Robert Witmer, Former New York Judge, Dies

G. Robert Witmer, of Webster, who served as a member of the New York judiciary for 35 years, died on Sept. 6 in Rochester. He was born in Webster on Dec. 26, 1904 and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1926. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1929.
